These classes are in order from beginner to advance.

LEARN TO BELAY

The goal of this class is to introduce new climbers into the sport and provide them with a comfortable setting in which to learn the basics of indoor climbing and Top Rope belaying. This class typically takes an hour.

Prerequisites

  • At least 14 years old
  • Current waiver on file
  • Current Gym Orientation on file

What You Will Learn

  • Proper use of equipment
  • Belay device set-up
  • Tie-in process
  • Communication/checking of equipment
  • Top Rope belay technique
  • Gym rules, policies, and procedures

Class participants must wait at least 24 hours to complete Skills Test after completing class in order to certify.

Cost

Free for members or must purchase a day pass.

CLIMBING 101

 

GVC’s Introduction to Climbing class is the first step in the Climber Education Program. The intention behind this free class is to set all of our climbers up, members or not, for climbing success! Climbing 101 starts with learning about basic climbing gear and finishes by teaching you the fundamentals to climbing movement on the wall. No experience is required! This class is 60 minutes long. All you need is comfortable clothing and a will to learn.

CLASS SCHEDULE

CLIMBING MOVEMENT
(temporarily unavailable, teacher is out on maternity leave)

 

This class is focused on developing your skills while on boulders or routes. Topics will include, but not be limited to: route reading, grip choice, foot work, body position, and clipping. If you are looking to take your climbing to the next level through better technique, rather than spending time doing pull-ups, than this 1 hour class is for you! Climbing shoes and chalk are required.

CLASS SCHEDULE

SPORT LEADING

The goal of this class is to introduce climbers to lead belaying and lead climbing. Providing them with a comfortable setting in which to learn the basics of indoor lead climbing and indoor lead belaying. With completion of this class you will have the ability to climb all terrain that GVC has to offer. This is a three hour course and participants will have the chance to stay after the class and practice their skills under the supervision of the instructor.

Prerequisites

  • At least 16 years old
  • Current waiver on file
  • Current Gym Orientation on file
  • Current GVC Top Rope Certification on file
  • Can comfortably climb any GYM 5.10a on top rope

  • Communication/checking of equipment
  • Lead Belay technique
  • Lead Climbing technique

CLASS SCHEDULE

ADVANCED LEAD BELAY AND FALL PRACTICE

Learn the low down on how to smoothly and comfortably belay your climbing partners on lead. During this class we will discuss and practice a multitude of professional belay techniques. Including: the art of the soft catch. We will also go over soft catch v. hard catch, understanding dynamic lead belaying, understanding the change in physics when there is a weight discrepancy, executing belayer’s duties, discussing the route with your climber and assisting your climber’s return to wall after a fall.

  • At least 16 years old
  • Current waiver on file
  • Current Gym Orientation on file
  • Current GVC Lead Certification on file
  • Can comfortably climb any 5.10a on top rope
